The Green Dream

After months of careful calculations, drafting, engineering and planning The Green Dream Build is underway. LSG is the projects (CM) Construction Manager lead by Traves W. Ogilvie, LEED AP and backed by a talented team that also designed the house and many of it's systems. Popular Science staff photographer John Carnett is the owner of The Green Dream home which - when complete - will be one of the greenest, eco-friendly, homes in the country. Follow the build at popsci.com

This past week was a productive one as LSG showed up with the engineered floor system and the structural steel package, all of which fit effortlessly onto the foundation. The structural steel was designed, detailed and fabricated by The Lightship Group to exacting tolerances. Working with Popular Science Magazine's John Carnett slabs were removed and structural footings were installed along with two huge concrete piers (custom forms by LSG) which will support John's crazy steel staircase, which he intends to fabricate onsite himself.

The deck is down and steel is standing...the next chapter of The Green dream story is ready to be written stay tuned.

Lightship Group Awarded Seven Figure T.S. Kennedy Berthing Modification Contract

The United States Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) has chosen the Rhode Island firm Lightship Group to add 108 new berthing spaces to its training vessel T. S. Kennedy. The Lightship Group will partner with Maryland based “Custom Ship Interiors” in a collaborative effort to complete the extensive overhaul in 135 days. Located in Buzzards Bay Massachusetts the T.S. Kennedy is the Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s training vessel.

The scope of work is extensive including structural modifications, insulation, flooring, joinery, electrical, plumbing and HVAC work. Driven by specifications outlined by The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) and by The American Society for Testing and Measures (ASTM) the performance period is slated to begin on May 18th 2009. As part of MARAD’s requirements berthing for (18) officers and (18) state rooms will also be constructed under the contract.

Lightship Group directed an unprecedented amount of personnel towards the T.S. Kennedy bidding process, and it paid off. MARAD recognized not only the thoroughness of the proposal but weighted Lightships experience and ability to perform when making their decision. During the bidding process there was talk of towing the ship out of New England to complete the overhaul work elsewhere. This approach would have taken a much needed influx of money out of our regional economy. Luckily Lightship Group prevailed and consequently up to 20 local workers will enjoy steady employment throughout the summer.

Lightship’s T.S. Kennedy Project Management team will be anchored by Christopher Petit and Kenny Campbell. Also, Massachusetts Maritime graduate and Lightship co-owner Peter Starr, who lead the bidding effort, will also be involved in administering the contract. By awarding the T.S. Kennedy contract to the LSG/CSI partnership the Mass Maritime Academy and the Maritime Administration Department have once again demonstrated their confidence in The Lightship Group and its talented staff.
